I first heard the news via twitter. I’ve been neglecting my duties as a blogger and comedian for almost a month now. Tangled in the holidays, I haven’t even been keeping up with all of the crazy MMA news/rumors floating around. Until my old partner from HammerFisted.com, Greg Webb (who is also writing for Gunaxin) asked if I heard the good news about my boy Villante.

It’s not a joke or exaggeration that Gian is “my boy.” He is. And my boy just signed with Strikeforce for a multi-fight deal that starts with Chad Griggs on Feb. 12th. We have hung out together and threw back some beers, I used to see him when I would be credentialed at Ring of Combat (He was especially eager to talk to press about his friend Chris Weidman,who is also an up-and-comer out of Long Island, New York). Well, honestly Villante and I have at least felt each other’s presence since 2000 when we were playing against each other in lacrosse. Villante and I went to different high schools in the same small suburban town. Levittown. We both took faceoffs and even got into a few pushing matches during a heated game. Where I may or may not have taken a swing at the champ and he may or may not have punched my “face off” in retaliation.

I’m not going to act like we were each others’ personal rival. I’m pretty sure he didn’t know I fucking existed until he started seeing me at Ring of Combats with a familiar face and press passes. I mean, come on. Gian was a varsity lacrosse player, starting All-State fullback/linebacker on a championship football team and an All-Americanwrestler in high school. You know what I was? Drunk.

A funny story that I remember from Villante’s high school days was that when he was a senior and I was a junior (circa 2003) a talented running back named Nick Tintle (who ended up being captain of the UNC Tarheels lacrosse team) came up to varsity for the MacArthur Generals of Levittown. I remembered reading in the newspaper…not the town tribune…the Daily fucking News that Villante was interviewed about changing his position to fullback after having a stellar season as tailback as a junior. Villante’s response was very similar to “It’s cool. As long as I get to smash someone in the mouth and Nick breaks for a touchdown, I’ll be okay.”

Again, not exaggerating. After that, Villante went to Hofstra where he spent 5 years playing middle linebacker for a no longer existent football program that produced greats like Wayne Chrebet and Marques Colston. It was rumored that Villante would be drafted to the NFL and to be honest, knowing him, I wouldn’t have doubted it.

One thing that I always wondered was how he would fair as a professional fighter due to his wrestling background and “stories I’ve heard from the playground.” Well, he must have had the same vision that I had because he is now a 7-1 professional fighter and has never gone to a decision in his 8 matches. He has 5 TKOs, 2 submissions and only one of those 7 matches even made it to the 2nd round (and only 1:25 into it). His only loss? Came from a horrible arm injury he suffered during the match. If I’m not mistaken, Villante was also fighting at 205lbs. for the match. All homerism aside, this kid might be the real deal.

On February 12th in East Rutherford, NJ…Villante will have to prove that he is the real deal in his own backyard. Um well neither of us like to consider New Jersey as our backyard but until New York smartens up and legalizes MMA, it’s all we have. Villante will be going against another heavyweight prospect for Strikeforce in a reserve match for their highly anticipated Heavyweight Grand Prix. Chad Griggs was a heavy underdog to Bobby Lashley and probably ruined many of Strikeforce’s plans for the huge black man with a name that has star-power. Griggs spoiled that and wants to prove that HE is a contender with an 9-1 record and 8 KOs. The hard hitting Griggs got Lashley TKOd out of “retirement” in his Strikeforce debut.

I think it is a pretty even match for Villante and he definitely has a chance to win. He’ll probably come out as the underdog but the two fighters will be very similar in weight and it could prove to be a pretty cool fight to watch on an already stacked card.

I’ve read a lot of articles and stories on fighters who had to overcome insurmountable odds and have stories of poverty, physical disadvantages and blah blah blah. You know what? It’s about time you just had a humble, All-American dude who likes to “smash people in their mouths” had a nice story about them and their accomplishments rather than some lump with less than 4 limbs.

This South African model has appeared in magazines such as FHM, GQ and Sports Illustrated. Not only is she a hot piece of ass but she has also posed for Playboy as well!

Although Jon Jones respects Ryan Bader’s skills he plans to neutralize it with flashy moves we’ve never seen before. I personally think that Jones will take this one but it will also be a great fight.

Well, the first thing we need to talk about is the main event. Jesus tapdancing Christ. That Frankie Edgar has some chin. How he managed to escape the first round is beyond me. Oh wait. No it isn’t. Gray Maynard hits softer than my naughty pirate girlfriend. Don’t get me wrong Gray Maynard is an excellent fighter…I nicknamed him “Jon Fitch with testosterone” but you have to seriously look at the guy’s record. He is an impressive 12-0-1 with 1 No Contest so technically he is undefeated but the NC came from both fighters being unable to continue and the draw, he just couldn’t put Edgar away. Then you take into consideration that he was on a VERY impressive 8 fight win streak between the NC and the Draw with Edgar…but he only had one KO throughout the whole streak and that was the first fight after the NC in 2007. Maynard then lucked out with split decisions with good fighters like Roger Huerta and Nate Diaz, so I really don’t know what to think about this guy. He punched himself out, got gassed and couldn’t put Edgar away. If I was him, I’d be in the gym right now. Lesson Learned #1: Gray Maynard needs to learn to either knock someone out or choke someone unconscious because not finishing fights is obviously hurting his career.

On the other hand, you need to look at Frankie Edgar. Who is just surviving. Honestly, it looks like he was over-matched in 2 of his last 3 fights but the kid still manages to pull out wins and you have to hand it to him. BJ Penn is (arguably) legendary in this sport and I personally thought BJ took the first fight but the judges had it unanimously going to Frankie Edgar. Then when everyone doubted Edgar, he came out and beat Penn again. The second time more convincingly. At UFC 125, Gray Maynard seemed to look twice the size of “Fe” (Frankie Edgar’s new nickname, or the element “iron” for you meat heads out there. Pretty creative if you ask me.) I was really impressed with his chin, his heart and eventually when he was seeing straight his boxing and take downs. However, Lesson Learned #2: Frankie Edgar cannot beat Gray Maynard. This is their second fight and Edgar is 0-1-1 against Maynard. These are the only two blemishes on an otherwise stellar record for Edgar.

Another memorable moment is when Brandon Vera fought and Thiago Silva decided that he didn’t like the way Vera’s nose looked. Silva decided to change Vera’s nose for him. The result? The banner picture. That might be the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. But during the fight, Brandon Vera was pretty much embarrassed by Thiago Silva, who at one point pretty much started playing bongos on Vera’s back. Then Silva started clapping, of course Vera’s head was in the middle of Silva’s hands but he was clapping nonetheless. Lesson Learned #3: Jon Jones ruins peoples careers and he hurt Vera so bad that he forgot how to fight. All I’m saying is: C’mon son, the dude is playing bongos on you. Get mad!”

My fourth point has to be about Leban v. Stann. I was really disappointed in this match up. I really felt like Leban deserved more. I was so pumped that Leban was being a bad ass who took 3 fights in 7 months and won them all. Well, more impressively 2 fights in 3 weeks. Yeah…Leban won via KO…twice in 3 weeks. Not many UFC fighters can say that these days. So I felt like Stann hadn’t proved himself to deserve Leban as an opponent. Stann is a tough dude (Ex-Navy Linebacker, an ex-Captain in the USMC who eventually earned a Silver Star.. he has SERIOUS knockout power and a really tough chin) but Stann was 9-3 coming into the fight and every time he fought a remotely good fighter, he lost. It’s like the organization WANTS Stann to be good because of his background. I’m okay with that. Lesson Learned #4: Just because you’re a little girl about the fight card, doesn’t mean it won’t end awesomely. Stann ended up knocking Leban out like a little girl and Leban’s corner complained of the flu. Yeah, okay. And I suppose Leban was on Nyquil when he got that DUI in Hawaii, right? Kick rocks.

Lesson Learned #5: Clay Guida is the greatest man alive! Just kidding. I do love him though. I’m glad to see him looking good and winning fights. After losing 2 in a row to top talent in the division, Clay has come back with a 3 fight win streak in which he has submitted them all (2 submissions of the night, one of which was last night). He could be next in line for a title shot after Maynard v. Edgar 3 and Anthony Pettis gets a crack at the winner. So Clay would need to win one more fight, but if he looks as impressive as he has been, the cardio-machine Clay Guida could see himself fighting a 5 round fight very soon.

The next fighter I want to talk about hurts my heart. Phil Baroni (a Long Island product) was handed his walking papers after being knocked out by Brad Taveras. It was tough for me to watch it because Phil looked like he was in great shape and even may have had an opportunity to win the fight against Taveras. Well, until Taveras kicked Phil right in his guido face and Phil even motioned for him to “Come on” and yeah….that was the end of the god damned fight. Taveras hurt Baroni so bad that Phil tried getting up and taking down the referee in an embarrassing moment in his career. Lesson Learned #6: Phil Baroni can’t hack it in the UFC and needs to retire before he gets hurt soon. And that is coming from a guy who genuinely roots for Baroni.

And lastly, we need to talk about the boss. I love when Dana White is giving to his fighters. Of course the UFC pays their fighters more money than other organizations but I really love the fact that he rewards performances in the ring so it gives fighters extra motivation to actually do something for the fans. The KO of the Night and the Submission of the Night are probably my favorite things that the UFC has ever implemented. But in the holiday spirit, Dana White not only gave Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard the Fight of the Night honors but he rewarded them both with their win bonuses. So he spent an extra $77,000 between the both of them when really the FotN honors should have been more than sufficient. Edgar made $51,000 for showing, $51,000 for winning and $60,000 for the FotN honors ($162,000 and he retained the belt. Solid night to me…) and then Gray Maynard who doesn’t get to walk away with the belt (and would have most likely lost the fight if it wasn’t for the first round scored 10-8) earned $26,000 for showing + $26,000 for winning and another $60,000 for the FotN honors bringing him to $102,000 for the fight.

Then on top of Dana White rewarding those two fighters for putting on such a great show (by spending a grand total of $197,000 in bonuses), he then rewarded the fans by scheduling Frankie Edgar v. Gray Maynard 2. Lesson Learned #7: Dana White is an awesome boss who rewards you for having awesome fights with your co-workers.

Welcome back, all. I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. And if you are a big MMA fan like myself, what better way to enjoy it than with a great fight like Alistair Overeem v. Todd Duffee for DREAM? Well, it sounded like it was going to be two gigantic human beings punching each other in the face as hard as they could…on paper. What actually happened is that “The Reem” proved once again that he is unstoppable.

Many consider Overeem to be the #1 heavy weight in the world. Now that he is the K-1, DREAM and Strikeforce heavyweight champion it is very hard to argue that. Of course this is arguable and until we seem Reem v. Fedor, Cain, Werdum, Junior dos Santos or Shane Carwin… I really don’t want to even discuss him as the #1 fighter in the world. I don’t consider Reem hiding from big fights, but he sure as hell isn’t being scheduled for big fights.

His only two fights this year were against Brett Rogers (in May) and Todd Duffee (early this morning on the last day of the year). So maybe K-1 is taking up a lot of his time? I don’t really know. I do know he is destroying the low level talent he is being handed and I would really like to see someone other than Dana White step their game up and create a super fight.

On the other side of things, Todd Duffee got the biggest fight of his career and KO’d in 19 seconds. This was after once being considered one of the best prospects the UFC had. He KO’d Tim Hague in 7 seconds and then he beat the ever loving garbage out of Russow for 3 rounds. Well, 8 minutes and 33 seconds. Then Russow hit Duffee with everything he had. Duffee was KO’d and then eventually Dana White cut him from the UFC very suddenly and no one knew why. Was Dana on to something or did he just see this guy’s fall coming? Or is Reem just too much to handle?

This fight was just basically a tease because now I need to see Reem and Duffee fight more to decide their fate. You know I do that right? I’m the fate decider.
